Designing Safe Neighborhoods

The Designing Safe Neighborhoods project will bring residents, stakeholders, experts, and decision-makers together over the course of three days (Feb. 21-23) to learn about and co-create crime prevention and placemaking strategies for the Pleasantview neighborhood area.

In partnership with the City of Lansing, the MSU School of Planning, Design and Construction (SPDC) and MSU Extension are hosting this multi-day event at Elmhurst Welcome Center (2400 Pattengill Ave, Lansing 48910).

On Thursday, Feb. 21 from 6-8:30pm there will be a kick-off event where we learn about effective crime prevention and placemaking strategies followed by activities for residents and stakeholders to give their input on what might work to increase quality of life in this area.

On Friday, Feb. 22, graduate students from MSU’s SPDC, under the direction of expert faculty, will create design solutions based on Thursday’s input. There will be one hour meetings at 1, 2, and 3pm to give them input and again at an Open House at 7pm, where you can see their work and provide suggestions.

On Saturday, Feb. 23, the students will be revising the designs in the morning and then they will be presented at a final meeting on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2pm. Anyone is welcome to come to any or all of these events. Refreshments will be served. If you can’t make the formal times, but want to stop by and see what’s going on, Room 13 where the team will be working will be open.
