Recreational Fire Permits

Recreational Fire Permits are available to purchase for $50. Permits are valid April 1 - March 31. We now offer three ways to apply and pay: online, mail, and in person.
 Apply and pay online (Beginning March 8):


To renew your permit by mail complete, sign, print and return the Recreational Fire Permit Application 
along with the fee of $50. Make check or money order payable to City of Lansing and mail to:

Permits can also be purchased in person on weekdays from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at:

Permit Requirements

Please remember the following requirements when applying for the recr
eational burn permit:
  • Burning is allowed Monday - Thursday 5pm to 10pm, Friday 5pm-12am and 8am to 12am Saturday and Sunday. The following holidays that fall during the week: Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day, ML King Jr. Day follow weekend hours, 8am to 12am. 
  • Burning of brush, leaves, grass or trash is strictly prohibited
  • Burning of building material or non-wood items is strictly prohibited
  • The fire must be continuously attended
  • Fires in approved containers are required to be at least 15 feet from any structure
  • Fires in an in-ground pit are required to be 25 feet from any structure
  • The Lansing Fire Department reserves the right to revoke any recreational burn permit for violation of any of the above regulations and or Fire Code
  • Permit is strictly for recreational purposes only
  • A water source must be readily available
