The Lansing Public Service Department is responsible for clearing snow and salting of 444 miles of City streets.
Our technical staff, supervisors and equipment operators have worked together to improve every aspect of our snow removal program. Keeping our City's streets and sidewalks clean and safe during the winter is a big job. It can't happen without the cooperation of all of our residents, businesses and agencies.

Salting of Streets
City crews will salt 139 miles of designated City streets (State trunklines and major streets) and continue until snow accumulates up to two inches deep. Please do not tailgate salt trucks. Remember, they are tossing rock salt and are often driving slower than the rest of the traffic.
When snow depth exceeds two inches on State trunklines and major streets, City crews will start plowing 139 miles of designated City streets. When snow depth on local streets exceeds 4 inches, crews will start plowing the local streets as soon as the State trunklines and major streets are completed. Please do not "crowd the plow," our trucks are driving slower and need plenty of room to push the snow to the curb, use caution when passing a plow truck.
Residents have several responsibilities when it snows:
- The occupant (or owner of an unoccupied parcel) must remove snow and ice from the sidewalk within 24 hours after the snow has fallen.
- When ice forms on sidewalks you must spread salt, ashes, saw-dust or sand on the sidewalk within 24 hours after the ice has formed.
- Snow and ice cannot be piled or pushed into the street or the shoulder of the road.
- Snow and ice cannot be piled in the public Right of Way - it cannot impair vehicular or pedestrian traffic or obstruct the view of a driver.
Parked cars delay our snow plowing efforts. During snow removal operations, please do not park on the street (day or night). City ordinance prohibits parking on City streets between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. daily. Obeying this law helps us plow our streets efficiently.

Each snow fall is different. The decision when to start or stop any activity is made depending upon weather conditions. We use information from the National Weather Service and a private weather forecasting service to help us make our decisions. We need your help to keep our streets and sidewalks safe during the winter. We also need your understanding that we cannot clear streets instantly. Our trucks must travel nearly 2,400 miles every time we plow the City and usually the conditions they must travel in are very poor.
