Lansing's Fair Housing Ordinance prohibits discrimination in real estate transactions involving housing accommodations on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, marital status, age, national origin, ancestry, political orientation, disability, use of adaptive devices or aids or source of income. The Human Relations and Community Services Department is charged with the enforcement of this ordinance and takes complaints of Housing Discrimination. Anyone who violates this ordinance may be charged with a misdemeanor. Conviction may be punished by fine and/or imprisonment.

City Ordinance 206.21 states that all contractors and employers who have provided goods and/or services to the City totaling $5,000 or more in any calendar year must adhere to the principles and policies of equal opportunity as mandated by the City's Affirmative Action Plan, as amended. Copies of this plan are on file with the City Clerk and available at a nominal cost. Failure to comply with this section may preclude the contractor from conducting further business with the City.
