Contractual Employee: Operations Specialist

​ The City of Lansing's Office of Financial Empowerment is a branch of Mayor Virg Bernero's Office that seeks to educate, empower, and advocate for individuals and families in building a financially stable future. The Office houses three programs: Lansing SAVE, Youth Employment Success, and the Financial Empowerment Center. Each program focuses on various stages of an individual's life, with the intent to implement a two-generational approach to addressing poverty. The Office of Financial Empowerment is also in the process of strengthening its impact in advocacy and policy change. ​ The Office of Financial Empowerment seeks an enthusiastic and motivated individual to work as an Operations Specialist reporting to the Office's Director, Amber Paxton.


The Operations Specialist assists with all aspects of day to day support and management of the responsibilities for the City of Lansing's Office of Financial Empowerment. Responsibilities may include:
​ 25% - Bank On 2.0 Grant Project with Parole
​10% - Consumers Energy Grant Project - Data Collection and Analysis
​25% - Summer Youth Employment
​10% - Data Management and Reporting
​30% -
​ Selection and oversight of one intern per term
​Social media and website
​ Assist with grant research, writing, and reporting
​Assist with outreach events and fundraising events
​Advocacy for victims of predatory lending
​Serving on committees/workgroups as needed
​Other duties as assigned

Bank On 2.0 | Plan and attend 2 events per month at the Ingham Parole officeCoordinate with PNC Bank, Flagstar Bank, and CASE Credit Union to have them attend the events and open accountsRetrieve the data from the 3 financial institutions on a monthly basis and compile grant reporting.Oversee the ordering of gift card incentives, and the delivery
Consumers Energy | Retrieve and analyze the data from CE Pass on each participating client, monthlyReport quarterly to Consumers EnergyOversee the ordering of gift card incentives, and ensure gift cards are received by all who have earned them.
Summer Youth Employment | Work with City of Lansing Parks and Rec Department to deliver financial education to youth employment participants, including access to safe and affordable bank accountsWork with National League of Cities / CFED by participating in meetings and conference callsHandle any reporting required by the technical assistance grant from CFED
Grants Research | Utilize Foundation Center to research public and private foundations and corporations who may have interest in giving to the Office of Financial Empowerment. Develop a tracking system for them, including appropriate ask amounts, deadlines, and types of funding (staffing, equipment, technology, etc). Where appropriate, draft proposals or letters of intentUse the data collected to develop a calendar based on deadlines
Social Media & Website | Keep website updated including staff photographs and bios, client resources, online scheduling informationUpdate the client testimonials page for each counselor as neededUse HootSuite to post to Facebook and Twitter, at least four posts per week. Use social media guidelines developed by CFE Fund for types of posts.Use social media to regularly recognize program partners
Other Tasks As Assigned | To include, among others: Outreach Events, Developing Potential Partnerships, Money Power TV Show, Serving on Committees and Workgroups, Predatory Lending Advocacy and Research, Assisting clients in appointment scheduling


​ The Operations Specialist is self-motivated, thrives in an environment that requires multi-tasking, and pays great attention to detail and accuracy in data. Excellent writing and organizational skills, flexibility, willingness to learn, and an interest in financial empowerment, economic mobility, and economic justice are essential.

​ For this position, the Office is looking for applicants with:
​ - An undergraduate degree in social science, public policy, economics, or related fields
​- A demonstrated interest in or knowledge of economic justice, public policy, or social justice topics;
​- Excellent writing and communication skills;Excellent organizational skills;
​- Excellent strategic, problem-solving, and analytic skills;
​ - Ability to work on multiple projects effectively and efficiently, both independently and collaboratively with a team;
​- Experience or training in development, or interest in developing fundraising skills;
​- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
